The ValueLine Arithmetic charts are surprisingly strong in the long term. The USD, bond yields, and banking index remain in strong downtrends.

Banking Index Back to 1994 Level
May 26th, 2009 No Comments
The S&P Banking (BIX) index was in a bullish move from 1994 to 2007. Price then dropped sharply between the 8×1 and 4×1 descending angles into March. The bounce came at the extension to the original 1×1 descending angle.

Mortgage Insurers About to Collapse
March 2nd, 2009 No Comments
I read a number of fundamental and political stories about the mortgage insurers yesterday. I don’t put much credibility into any fundamental or political story as they are always slanted in some manner where the truth isn’t revealed. Looking at the charts of the aggregate industry, it appears to me like the bottom is below the current level.

Expiration Day Reversal
November 21st, 2008 6 Comments
Volume was up but that was most likely associated with options expiration. The SPX reversed but ended lower than yesterday’s high. The market may move higher from here, but nothing in the charts says it is probable.

Bonds Show No Interest in Inflation Argument
November 19th, 2008 4 Comments
The ten year bond yield is at levels from the early 1960s. Price essentially followed the slope down that it followed up from the sixties to the early 1980s.

September 24th, 2008 No Comments
The US Dollar (USD) began a long drop in 2001 after a big run up. Using that slope at the low in March shows the 1:1 Gann angle near $73 which is a 75% retrace of the short term move.

Watch the Smallcaps for Signs of Plan Success
September 22nd, 2008 No Comments
I have mention here that the fact that the smallcaps were holding up well was a sign that these businesses were not having trouble receiving loans. Small companies do not have large cash reserves and need to finance growth.

Value Line Arithmetic Remains Above July Low
September 18th, 2008 2 Comments
Price of the VLE is above the July low and at the 7/8 retrace level of the 2007-2008 range. This suggests to me that the total market remains healthy and the financials are causing all of the problems.
