The ValueLine Arithmetic charts are surprisingly strong in the long term. The USD, bond yields, and banking index remain in strong downtrends.

ValueLine Arithmetic Square of 90
November 26th, 2009 1 Comment
The ValueLine Arithmetic (VLE) Square of 90 using trading days shows price 180 TD beyond the March low. Interesting that the left shoulder of the head-and-shoulders formation occurred 45 days into the second 90 day cycle, the head at the 3/4 time line, and the shoulder finished at the 180 day mark. A new high [...]

The ValueLine Arithmetic Index (VLE) continues to show amazing strength as the rally moves beyond 200 calendar days from the March low. Price remains above the 2×1 angle of the 2007-2009 bear market and, in my opinion, should not be shorted.

The charts are strong as the 180 day cycle has come and gone. Weakness would not be unexpected this week based on time cycles. But the price and time slopes are very strong and should not be shorted even if price does roll over.

The ValueLine Arithmetic index is touching resistance at the 1×1 descending angle while the SP500 Equal Weighted index hits the 50% price line. Both a strong resistance levels for the market to attack after a long rally.

The market is in the right position to move up in the next week or two from 5-10% below the current level. At the minimum, I expect a test of the high before this move is complete.

A long term comparison of the Dow in 1929 to the Nasdaq in 2000 show the markets in sync. A continuation of the move beyond 60% would signal that long positions are becoming higher in risk.

ValueLine Arithmetic Very Strong Since March
May 5th, 2009 1 Comment
I have mentioned several times previously that I use the ValueLine Arithmetic Index (VLE) to judge the strength of the total market. The index is unweighted and isn’t mimicked by ETFs or hedge funds from what I can tell.
